Jo Tunmer's New York Exhibition

British painter Jo Tunmer looks to nature’s solitary moments for inspiration, creating paintings that give traditional landscapes a contemporary perspective and allow the spectator to take part in nature’s stillness. Her works of art are often large in scale and her methods are both traditional and innovative; her conventional use of oil paints, canvas, wood, and paper are contrasted by her layering techniques, her frequent use of pure graphite, and “scratches” that reveal concealed hues. Her “scratching” approach, in particular, creates palpable depth on the otherwise flat medium.

Her British landscapes are aesthetically comparable to the works of Richard Diebenkorn and David Hockney, in turn reflecting her extended stay in Southern California. Her compositions are often characterized by a low horizon with minimal vegetation, allowing the billowing blue-violet skies to dominate the picture plane. Her paintings have an almost photographic power in their ability to capture transient moments in time, allowing the spectator to reflect on Tunmer’s memories and envision their own.

Reception: Thursday, June 10, 2010 6-8 PM
Exhibition Dates: 6/4/2010 - 6/25/2010

'Part Of Something Bigger Than Myself' by Craig Kerrecoe

This is the piece I will be donating to the CAFA raffle. It is a giclee print on canvas, mounted on white card and framed with a black solid wood frame. I'll also have a selection of work from the same series as part of the exhibition.

It is part of a series of digital images I have been working on recently, based on photographs of my original paintings. These photographs are edited in Photoshop, making much use of the 'cut-out' filter and then text (usually derived from the title of the original painting, or song lyrics) is applied.

I may also donate a couple of framed sketches, that I did last year, to the raffle. I'll have to have a rummage around...

The Bridge of Sighs - Cambridge

Introduction to Trees by Howard Guest

The photographs that I will show are the first of a series of images on trees or more specifically the bark of trees. The photographs are really about the detail of bark, which when you start to look, is anything but the brown crayon feature of children's paintings. Finding the right bit of bark to photograph is about looking and seeing - about composition, form and colour. There are a vast array of trees out there, different genus, different species and different bits of bark...

Donate to Claire Scott's Fund-raising Trip

Fund-raising trek to Machu Picchu - 22-31 May 2010 for the National Autistic Society.

Claire Scott:
"My first trek, in Jordan, was a truly wonderful experience and knowing that I was raising money for such a good cause made it all even more amazing. Thank you to you all who supported me. The National Autistic Society provides endless information, courses and support. I use them regularly and I am delighted to be raising money for them again.

So...the next challenge is the wonders of Machu Picchu. I am funding the trip so all funds raised will go directly to The National Autistic Society. The Inca Trail is classed as very challenging!! The trail includes very different terrain from high desert plateau to tropical Andean rainforest, ancient Inca ruins and diverse ecological zones - to the “Lost City” of the Incas.

Pan-pipes and woolly ponchos here I come!!! Thank you."

Contributor: Rhiannon

Since graduating from the University of Huddersfield, Rhiannon Thomas has been exhibiting in her home town of Cambridge as well as London. Using her training in loom and hand weave, she creates sculptures with the traditional techniques of basketry and brading. The craft work is displayed as art pieces with light and shadow playing an important role. Textures and colours guide the shapes which are based on botanical themes as are Rhiannon’s paintings. They are semi-abstract and also act as inspiration for her textile sculptures.
